Airports, Roads and Rail

Gatwick airport lies to the east of Barcroft. It is 35 minutes cross country drive (through the villages of Ockley and Newdigate) from here.

Heathrow, is a similar distance, but as you need to go via the M25, it takes longer, depending on the time of day you are travelling. You can get there in 45 minutes but we would always advise at least an hour. A local taxi service and secure car parking is available.

Barcroft sits just North of the A281, south of the A25 about 5 miles from the A3. Junction 9 and 10 of the M25 are the closest. Both are equidistance, at about half hour away.

The closest mainline stations are that of Guildford and Dorking, with fast services to London Waterloo or London Victoria (35mins). The smaller stations of Chilworth, Ockley and West Clandon are a 20min drive away.

Public Houses and Restaurants

Cranleigh is walking distance from Barcroft and offers numerous eating out options, whether you enjoy Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian or English, you will have plenty to choose from.

Similarly the local pubs in the surrounding villages are a real treat. We will be happy to advise you.

Cranleigh and the surrounding towns and villages provide excellent shops, pubs and restaurants for you to enjoy. Guildford’s shops are twenty minutes away, with all the big retailers there and late nights on Thursday evenings.

There are also many National Trust properties within a short drive Clandon Park, Hatchlands, Winkworth and Leith Hill Tower (the tallest point in Surrey), to name a few.

The ancient village of Shere is just 3 miles away, a picture perfect English village. This has been used as the set for many films in the past and if you visit, you will understand why. With the charming River Tillingbourne running through it, an old forge, a beautiful traditional church and its quaint English Tea Shop and pubs, it’s the perfect place to start or finish a walk.

The National Trust’s Winkworth Arboreteum is a short drive away, on the other side of Cranleigh. In the autumn, the display of colour is one of the most spectacular you can see. There is no better time to walk it then in the early morning dawn or early evening.

Nature around Barcroft

Barcroft is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is one of 36 nationally protected landscapes in England, having equal landscape status and protection to a National Park. One of the first landscapes to be designated in 1958, the Surrey Hills boasts a diverse and rich landscape just waiting to be discovered.

The hills themselves embrace an amazing variety of countryside, from the rolling chalk downs of yew and box woodland and flower rich grasslands, to the acid heaths and woodland of the Greensand Hills that rise to form the highest point in South East England at Leith Hill.

The hills stretch across the chalk North Downs that run from Farnham in the west, above Guildford, Dorking and Reigate, to Oxted in the east. To the south are the Greensand Hills that include Black Down and the Devil’s Punch Bowl. In between are the river valleys of the Wey, Tillingbourne and Mole and the heaths of Frensham, Thursley and Blackheath.

The Surrey Hills offers some of South East England’s most beautiful and accessible countryside. There is an extensive footpath network, open commons, breathtaking views, attractive market towns and villages and much more. Over the centuries the Surrey Hills has become a very special place to visit and live.

In the spring, the beech trees splash out at the bright fluorescent green spray of leaves, with two big willow trees gracing the paddocks below.

In the autumn Barcroft is edged by the beautiful orange and browns of the foliage as another year passes.

Up on the sandy hills you will be able to pick the hurts as they ripen in June time. And in the fields around there are plenty of spots to harvest the Sloes to make your very own home made Sloe Gin. Ask Malene for her recipe.
